Local 420 Members
Insulate Conditions,
Benefits With Star
Porcelain Contract
TRENTON, N.J.
Star Porcelain Co. workers, members of UE Local 420, ratified
a new three-year agreement on Sept. 29. Star workers produce a variety of
specialty porcelain electrical insulators.
Employees with 20 years of service will see an increase in
vacation pay, up one-half percent from 9 to 9.5 percent of their prior years
earnings. Workers out on either workers compensation or New Jersey Disability
for 14 days at the time of the summer shutdown will no longer be charged
vacation at that time.
Life insurance increases by $5,000 to $20,000 in the third
year.
The contract calls for an upgrade for Kiln Placers/drawers to
labor grade 5 from the prior grades 4 and 3. This is accomplished as part of a
combination of the Kiln, Placing and Drawing departments into one Kiln Dept.
Likewise, the Maintenance Mechanic A classification is upgraded from labor
grade 6 to grade 7.
ADDITIONAL CHANGES
Language changes adjust the size of the bargaining and safety
committees to reflect the size of the current workforce. The contract
establishes new procedures for reporting extended absences should ones
return-to-work date change.
Employees on temporary transfer to an incentive job they have
not performed will now be allotted a 3-day break-in period before going on the
incentive rate for that job.
Wages increase by 2.5 percent the first year, 2 percent the
second year and 2 percent the third year.
The Local 420 committee consisted of Local Pres. Linwood
Rowell, Vice Pres. Jim Keim, Treas. Carlos Nazario and Sec. Maria
Belardo. They were assisted by Field Org. Jim Ermi.
