Representatives of UE attended the first-ever meeting of the
women’s committee of the International Confederation of Chemical, Energy,
Mine and General Workers’ Unions (ICEM) here on Sept. 26.
Participants, who came from seven unions in the United States
and Canada, included a description of work underway on women’s issues and
the degree of participation of women in the unions as elected officers or
staff. (UE compares very favorably with other unions in terms of participation
by women in all levels of the union, noted Robin Alexander, director of
international labor affairs.)
Discussion also focused on the possibility of a major
multi-union organizing campaign in an industry which falls within the ICEM’s
jurisdiction.
UE was represented by Ann Prieur and Linda
Longerbeam of Local 155 and Robin Alexander.
