Local 267 Hosts
Health Care Meeting
BURLINGTON, Vt.
At UE Local 267’s October membership meeting, political
leaders and other members of the community joined the local for a slide-show
presentation of the Labor Party’s ‘Just Health Care’ plan and a
discussion of the health care crisis. After a discussion of problems with the
current health-care system, UE members heard a presentation of how Just Health
Care would provide quality health care for everyone, with no co-pays, premiums
or deductibles, and with full choice of doctors.
A representative from Bernie Sanders’ office
emphasized the Independent Congressman’s longtime support for a national
health-care system like Just Health Care, then described Sanders’ work to
bring down prices for prescription drugs by allowing U.S. pharmacists to
import drugs from Canada, where prices are much lower. Democratic candidate
for U.S. Senate Ed Flanagan blasted his opponent’s role in gutting
Sanders’ bill in the Senate and contrasted it with his own commitment to
fight for a Just Health Care-style system. A representative from Progressive Anthony
Pollina’s campaign for governor said that Pollina was in full support of
the Labor Party’s Just Health Care program.
Also in attendance were Deb Richter, president of
Physicians for a National Health Program, Progressive candidate for state
representative Richard Kemp, and members of UE Local 221 and the
Teamsters.
Local 267 represents workers at the University of Vermont.
