Cedar County bargainers strike a congratulatory pose. Donald Torney, engineer, shakes hands with UE’s Jerry Droll as Sylvia Kelley looks on; also pictured are Mike Fletcher and Russell Deerberg.

The Cedar County Secondary Road Crew, members of amalgamated UE Local 893, voted heavily in favor on negotiated contract gains following completion of bargaining in late March.

The new three-year agreement includes across-the-board wage increases of 40, 45 and 45 cents, effective July 1 of each year covered by the contract. The wage increases will average 3 percent.

Additionally, after 48 months, the position of Maintenance Worker I will automatically upgrade to a II, with corresponding wage increases.

Other gains include: increasing accrual of banked compensatory time from 81 to 120 hours; expanding the recall period after layoffs from 12 to 24 months; an additional vacation day after 16 years of continuous service; adding step relations to relatives covered under funeral leave. And, as of July 1, the employer will pay $25 toward the cost of safety shoes.

The negotiating committee consisted of Jerry Droll, Russell "Hap" Deerberg and Mike Fletcher. They were assisted by UE Field Org. Sylvia Kelley.
