Independent Unions are more democratic, have greater financial
accountability, and are generally more attuned to the needs of their
members. These responses are typical of the discussions among
independent union members who have participated in UEs
presentation "Independent Unions in the 21st Century."
Late last year, UE began a dialogue with independent
unions all over the U.S. about preserving and enhancing member-run
unions. So far, almost 25 independent unions have participated in
the UE-sponsored presentation with more scheduled in the
coming months.
Challenges
Ahead
Independent union members and leaders are quite
realistic about the challenges facing their unions. Several
independents reported attempts by big affiliated unions to raid
their unions. Other leaders described difficulties acquiring
necessary resources, like leadership training or research on their
employer. Employer automation plans, privatization, and
subcontracting schemes are also an ongoing threat to members job
security.

the Dialogue
Participating independent leaders commented that the
UE-sponsored presentation was very useful in "taking
stock" of their unions strengths and weaknesses. One
independent President was so enthusiastic about the presentation
that he is scheduling the presentation for the entire membership.
All independent unions are welcome to join this
dialogue and schedule a presentation of "Independent Unions
in the 21st Century" for your leadership body or Executive
board ... just let us know ... |
