A UE Contract Comes
To Storm Lake Schools
Finally
STORM LAKE, Iowa
The custodial staff of the Storm Lake Community School District are now
working under their first union contract finally.
Months of negotiations, including two bargaining sessions with a
state-appointed mediator, concluded with a voluntary agreement on the eve of an
arbitration hearing.
The members of amalgamated UE Local 893 employed by the Storm Lake schools
voted to join the union in January 1997.
Gains realized in this first contract include a strong grievance
procedure, recognition of seniority for transfers, layoffs and recalls, union security
language, guaranteed work week for current employees, an additional holiday and a four
percent wage increase in each year of the two-year agreement.
Storm Lake is located in Buena Vista County, in northwestern Iowa.
The UE negotiating committee consisted of Ellen Rowlett and Vincent
English. They were assisted by Intl. Rep. Greg A. Cross.
