Gag-Rule
UNIVERSITY OF VERMONT
At a rally April 27, University of Vermont workers object to their
bosses' demand that the union agree to a gag-rule as a precondition for bargaining. The
330 UVM service and maintenance workers, who voted to join UE last December, received
backing from U.S. Rep. Bernie Sanders. Sanders sent a letter to the university's president
questioning the administration's attempt to 'muzzle' UE members. Bargaining between UE Local 276 and the University of
Vermont is now underway.
(Note: UE policy is to resist "gag-rules" and
"negotiations blackouts" to protect internal union democracy: first, because we
believe the members have a basic democratic right to know what is happening at the
bargaining table and second, to prevent the occurrence of such things as
"back-door" deals and "secret" agreements.)
