TOLEDO, Ohio April 1st, 2003 UE activists in Ohio joined with allies from Jobs With Justice to protest an appearance in Toledo by Art Velasquez, CEO of Azteca Foods. UE members at Aztecas Chicago plant are seeking a first UE contract and have been
on strike since last September 30th. Two mediation sessions were held by FMCS in March, but the sides remain far apart.
Velasquez was appearing at the Toledo Club for a breakfast forum sponsored by the University of
Toledo's "Center for Family Business." Many people arriving for the forum were given fliers about how Azteca actually treats
its workers in Chicago.
Marty Swander, president of UE Local 715 at Metaldyne, and Louie Price, president of UE Local 714 at Atchison Casting, were among UE members participating in the April 1 demonstration.
The protest was part of UEs April Days of Action, a series of protests to aid the fight for justice at Azteca. Field Organizer Al Hart put together the Toledo protest. For updates on the Azteca
struggle visit www.ranknfile-ue.org.
