Chicago, Il., June 25th, 2003 — Just over 30 days ago, Azteca workers honored a request by Azteca Foods to
'create a better
environment for negotiations.' We stopped holding rallies and actions to protest injustices at Azteca. We removed our "Boycott
Azteca" information from this website. And we hoped the company would finally work with us to make real progress toward a first UE
contract. But our efforts were apparently fruitless.
During the most recent bargaining session, held Thursday, June 19th, we presented a complete proposal
for a fair contract. The company's negotiators left without any response and without setting another date to meet. During our month-long
"moratorium," we learned that giving Azteca peace doesn't get us anything. Once again, we're left with no other choice but to
take action.
On June 24th, people from around the country stood in solidarity with us by participating in a
National 'Fax-In' to Azteca Foods CEO Art Velasquez. This action sent a clear message to Velasquez that his promises and half truths are
nothing less than empty stalling tactics. We will stand strong until justice is won!
