UE Convention Resolutions
Eliminate Hate Groups
At this time in our history, there is abundant evidence of discrimination against certain groups of people. So called "hate crimes" are on the rise, indicating a need for all members to stand in solidarity. Article IV of UE’s National Constitution promotes unity among all workers regardless of "skill, age, sex, nationality, color, race, religious or political belief or affiliation, sexual orientation, disability, or immigration status." UE members should carry this practice on in every walk of life.
Throughout this country hate groups have been actively soliciting members and promoting discrimination with signs, slogans, rallies, and campaigns. Their agenda is in direct opposition to the ideals of equality that serve as the foundation of our Constitution. We, as members, need to actively support immediate action when discriminatory practices are directed against any group.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT THIS 70th UE CONVENTION:
- Calls on our national and local unions to make our members and communities aware of the increase in the number of hate groups in our country, and to provide information and training to recognize and combat all forms of hate activities;
- Urge every local to set up a council to obtain information on anti-discrimination groups already active in the communities and to share that information with other unions and organizations, and to set up unity councils;
- Demand strict enforcement of existing anti-discrimination laws and just punishment for those who violate these laws.
