ELECTION DAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2006

UE RANK-AND-FILE
POLITICAL ACTION
CHECKLIST

1

Put the November 7th elections, and the work we need to do, on the agenda of your next local union meeting. Activate your Steward’s network - and review the following suggested activities in order to maximize voter education and turnout.

2

Review the two leaflets in this packet. Decide how many you will need, and how they will be copied. Make a concrete plan that spells out exactly who will distribute these flyers to which group in your workplace.

3

Be ready to discuss them with the members of your local during their distribution. DO NOT make the mistake of assuming that every member understands the gravity of the situation we are facing. Some will disagree or remain unconvinced.

4

Visit the UE web page at www.ranknfile-ue.org for regular updates on our progress.

5

Enroll yourself and the activists in your Local in the UE Activist Net e-mail alert and message system. Updates on this and other union-wide situations will be sent out periodically. Go the main UE web page at www.ranknfile-ue.org to sign up.

6

Organize a get-out-the-vote phone bank for your Local. This is more necessary than ever since many workplaces are decentralized over a wide geographical area or spread over several shifts. Pick an evening or two in late October; and get to work on the phones. Several members making calls while one member organizes phone numbers can accomplish a lot. Try it!

7

Combine with other UE Locals in your area - or other union locals - and multiply your impact. It’s always better when you have some help. Retirees and laid-off members can assist. Don’t hesitate to reach out and ask them for help! Why not distribute one of the UE flyers at a non-union workplace? Unorganized workers need to hear our message more than anyone.

8

Connect with others in your community who are working on the same wavelength. What organizations are active in the community and working to make positive changes on Election Day? Contact them and plug-in to magnify your efforts.

9

Don’t forget to contact your local news media - a nice photo in your local paper of a rank-and-file group working to dump anti-labor politicians would spread the message to working people all through your region.
