California Independent
Scores Election Win
SACRAMENTO, Ca In a closely contested election, the
independent United Public Employees (UPE) defeated the Laborers Union and won
the right to represent more than 1400 Sacramento County office and technical
public employees. According to UPEs internet web site, the independent union
won 51% of the total votes cast in the election.
UPE leader Sandy Poole commented that "the victory was due
to the hard work and dedication of workers . . . who were determined to have a
democratic and responsive union." According to Poole, the office and
technical workers expect to begin bargaining soon after the office and technical
workers elect their leadership.
The election was held on April 27th.
